Hi Aurora, thank you so much for your thoughtful response and encouragement. Like you, I’m also fascinated by the science of learning and have read many of the wonderful books and articles written as well as passed tests to try to prove my understanding of those concepts ! There is so much to read, analyze and digest and certainly room for debate about conclusions ! I agree learning styles is a limited framework (there are likely millions not 3 and this is an important point to bring up), but like personality styles it can be a helpful framework for many to understand how they best learn and also have more compassion for themselves should the traditional educational system that is often geared to those who are more visual. I understand that phonics can be a useful tool, but I respectfully disagree that it is an indispensable one and I have seen this method of modeling coupled with a desire and interest to learn work for many different children in my 15 years as a teacher to over 2k kids. Personally, I still feel modeling and parent engagement in a child’s learning process is a far more impactful tool and in fact, in this method. Maybe I should have specified that many children will learn phonetically using this method because that is how they personally best learn, because they will gauge their parents are sounding out words when they are read to in this way, without it explicitly being called phonics. Reading is a very interesting topic in and of itself and I hope to explore it further in future blogs. With regards to phonics, I’d love to see more of the research you’ve found and I’m sure others would as well! I’d love you to post links below so readers can draw on all the best research and practical advice available!
