Homeschooling Myths Debunked
I spend a lot of time debunking myths and misperceptions about homeschooling. One of the most common myths I hear about homeschooling is “I can’t teach my kid because I’m not a teacher.” It sounds fine in theory, but this is the ones, I actually find makes the least sense. First of all, there are loads of exceptional educational resources designed specifically for parents and caregivers to teach their kids from home. And the creators have iterated on them for years to ensure the run-of-the-mill parent or caregiver is getting the results they want in their kids. Secondly, parents complain that when they try to teach their kids or help them with homework, they don’t listen. This, I’d argue is something that needs to be deeply addressed whether a kid is in school or not because as a parent you’re responsible for raising your child and you’re going to need to find a way to communicate with them. Luckily there are lots of good books that can help you with this. Third, parents want their children to be exposed to other role models bedsides themselves. I would argue that there is MUCH more opportunity for this in homeschooling than traditional school, where kids engage mightily with other parent sin the community, do internships and take classes with a vast and eclectic mix of experts, teachers and friends that far exceeds what they’d…
