The case for a new economy for childcare…and education too!

Our childcare system is broken. Parents know it. Teachers know it. Politicians know it. And if you’re reading this, you likely suspect it too.

This is a problem that extends far beyond parents and kids. Our entire society’s future depends on the healthy development of our young. And frankly, our present too. I think a lot of adults without children suffer from not getting to spend time with the younger generation.

Education vs childcare (the false dichotomy)

In order to provide a framework for this conversation, it is important we start with a foundation of not seeing education and childcare as two separate things, as they are so often framed in discussions. No quality childcare experience is complete without education (putting kids in front of a TV or locking them in a playpen so they stay safe just doesn’t cut it) And no childhood education is complete without childcare (There is so much I could say on this topic but every school and academic setting, whether it be summer camp, school or an afterschool class should not overlook the vital component of nurturing a child’s social, emotional and physical well being. As humans, we emerge from the womb not fully formed and we need adults around us to develop into healthy, happy, empowered adults.)
